This month, I had the opportunity to participate in the OC Children’s Book Festival, where I shared my vision for my children’s books collection, tested merchandise ideas, and connected with countless families.
Here are a few reflections from the day:
1. There’s power in collaboration.
I teamed up with three amazing Vietnamese American children’s book authors, Chau with Gemma's Library, Alice Trinh, and Daisy Duong, to create a dedicated 'Viet Corner.' Together, we amplified our voices, supported one another, and introduced Vietnamese stories and culture to the public. It was a great reminder of how much further we can go when we build community together.
2. Your audience can be your best market research.
I shared my two upcoming books and tested interest in potential book merchandise ideas. I expected strong interest in puzzles and apparel, but families wanted character plushies. Listening directly to readers gave me valuable insights into what they want to see next.
3. Stories create meaningful connections.
One family shared with me that they used My Ông Ngoại’s Garden to announce their pregnancy to the future grandparents. Years later, their child is learning about Asian fruits and building a beautiful relationship with her grandpa. Stories like that remind me why I love creating books that can become part of family's core memories and traditions.
I’m also incredibly grateful for the friends who showed up to support me throughout the day.
As I continue to wrap up my current book projects, I’m reminded that writing meaningful stories, creating fun products, and connecting with community are what fuel this passion project of mines. #ChildrensBooks #VietnameseAmerican #AAPIAuthors #CommunityEngagement #IndieAuthor
